DuBose Heyward published the first novel of the Harlem Renaissance, Porgy, in 1936. The book was a success and Heyward became popular as a writer and as a lecturer at colleges and universities across the country. From January 1941 to December 1942 he served as the first African-American to serve as a full-time Professor of English at Howard University in Washington, D.C.. Heyward died of cancer on December 6, 1943
He is buried in Howard University's historic Oak Hill Cemetery in Washington, D.C..
